Dr. Scribb’s Fantastical Card Combinatorium is a collaborative writing game I co-designed with Jeff Watson and Simon Wiscombe. Combinatorium encourages players to embrace limitations as a tool for creativity, while placing dual emphases on both literary process and content.
After observing the success of Reality Ends Here, Wiscombe and Watson’s collaborative project-making game for first-year undergraduates at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, the designers teamed up with me to see how the Reality model could be applied to other genres of creative production.
Combinatorium is currently in beta-testing. The game was first run at 826LA West in Venice, CA in August of 2012. The next iteration will be presented at the Hammer Museum in Westwood, as part of their Sunday Afternoons for Kids Series.
