Can AI be Creative?

A keynote for Gamescom 2023 Congress.

I delivered this keynote at the Gamescom in Cologne, which was attended by 320,000 visitors. This was a lovely opportunity for me to reflect on the nature of human creativity, and a moment for me to articulate some imperatives about workers, AI and our future together. Here’s the blurb for the talk:

Within the past 12 months, AI has rocked commercial and creative landscapes, interjecting both optimism and uncertainty. While some tout AI as a path to innovation and prosperity, many creatives (including those in the games industry) perceive it as an existential threat. This talk uses the nature of creativity as a lens to analyze AI’s impacts on and possibilities for games. Ultimately, the presentation proposes ethical, pragmatic, and collaborative guidelines for games and our creative future.
